Long Toe, Low Heel Advice
Farriers dealing with a horse with long-toe, low-heel conformation sometimes focus too much on the heel, says Red Renchin, particularly in hunters and jumpers.
"Ideally with these horses, the point of breakover has to be moved back so it is directly under the front of the coffin bone," says the International Horseshoeing Hall Of Fame member from Mequon Wis. "This is extremely important because it often isn't the low heels that is the problem so much as the leverage created by the point of the toe. Horses have to be able to get over that toe easily, without resistance."
Renchin, American Farriers Journal technical editor, has more to say about dealing with long-toe, low-heel syndrome, and also described a hoof health classification system he's developed in an article in the July/August issue, which subscribers will be receiving soon.
At this current moment it is very wet here in QLD Australia, there are a lot of sore footed horses around and the heels/ feet are decaying rapidly. As a result I have been putting the reverse shoe on for support; this I find saves time and is very effective. I call the shoe the Ned Kelly shoe as the story goes that Ned Kelly was a bushranger who put his horse shoes on backwards; this was so the trackers could not tell which direction he was travelling in.
I have used reverse shoes for foundered horses with good results.I also use reverse shoes when I think a bar shoe might help, I will tack on a reverse shoe and see how the horse does for a week or so and then if I see positive results Iwill then go ahead and make my bar shoes and put those on. This saves the bar shoe until you see that it is needed.
I have used this for founder and had great results. Best ever and will use again. Have also used it when a horse has had a puncture in the front of the hoof to release the pressure on the sole/toe of the hoof. Will use it again as it has had the best results.
This would be a great article and discussion for the Farriers Journal! Interesting method for the negative palmar angle horse
Hi was wondering if any one could shed light on reverse shoeing and what the benefits are/
