The 2011 Rising Shoeing Stars
On February 3, 2011, American Farriers Journal recognized three of these individuals at the International Hoof-Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio. Each of the winners received a plaque, a 1-year subscription to American Farriers Journal, Summit registration and the American Farriers Journal "Kitchen Sink" package — a 3,406-page footcare reference library valued at $575. Also, the grand prize winner received $1,000 and the two runner-ups each received $500 to help them continue their hoof-care education
In addition, each school will receive a plaque honoring the selection of one of their graduates for this award.
Grand Prize Winner
The grand winner of the 2011 "Rising Shoeing Star" program is Steve Hedges, a 2007 graduate of the Midwest Horseshoeing School in Divernon, Ill. In 2010, Hedges bought the school and constructed a new school and dormitory.
In addition to teaching and running the school, Hedges maintains a full time farrier business. He believes its important to bring real world experience to his students.
Runners Up
Martin Zimmer, Vass, N.C. Zimmer graduated in 2007 from the Kentucky Horseshoeing School, receiving a High Distinction diploma. He became a certified farrier in 2008.
Zimmer is a member of the American Farriers Association and is in the process of becoming a tester for the AFA. He has completed two out of the three testing sessions.
Zimmer runs a profitable shoeing business and has earned a reputation for being professional, prompt and knowledgable.
Joe Nygren, Seymour, Wis. Nygren is a 2007 graduate of the Heartland Horseshoeing School in Lamar, Mo. After graduation, he joined the World Championship Blacksmith organization where he competes at the national level with other top farriers.
Nygren also holds a position on the board of directors for the Upper Midwest Horseshoers Association.
