Memorial Scholarship Established For Doug Pokorney
Douglas (Doug) J. Porkoney, CJF, passed away in the comfort of his home with the love and care of family and friends on Sept. 23, 2009. Born on May 22, 1942, Pokorney had been bravely battling mesothelioma for more than 5 years.
After graduating high school, he served in the U.S. Navy as a boilerman on the destroyer Charles H. Roan. After an honorable discharge, he attended the
Porterville Shoeing School and Lester Hollenbeck's Farrier School. He stayed in the Ithaca, NY area, where he shod horses for more than 40 years. He attended many clinics, conventions, as well as working with Curtis Hamilton and Bruce Daniel's short courses.
Doug was a noteable member of the American Farriers Association and delivered a popular gaited horseshoeing presentation at an association convention. He specialized in shoeing Morgan and Arabian Show Horses and was show farrier at many large horse shows.
New York farrier Steve Kraus remembered Porkoney as "a friend to all he met, be it horse owners, horses and other farriers."
A funeral service was held Sept. 27, in Trumansburg his home town, attended by many local farriers, horse owners and friends. A full military Committal Ceremony followed.
