Douglas J. Pokorney Scholarship Established For Cornell Farrier Students
After the passing of Doug Pokorney, his wife Denise has established a scholarship
fund endowment for farrier students taking the farrier course at Cornell University. Doug had interacted and provided guidance to many farrier students at Cornell over the past 42 years, so it was deemed appropriate to remember him this way. This perpetual fund has been partially funded by the auction of Doug’s equipment and supplies, donations from former clients, friends, farriers, and several manufacturers and suppliers in the farrier industry. Doug’s family will fund the balance of what is needed to complete the fund. If you care to make a donation send a check to: Tompkins Trust Co. Attn: Cheryl Reynolds, PO Box 702, Trumansburg, NY 14886.
The scholarship will provide free tuition for the 16 week farrier course at Cornell University to one student selected for the Fall semester only, every year. A committee will review applicants’ résumés and select the most qualified individual. Criteria for selection are being established at this time, but the intention is to select individuals who have demonstrated a strong desire to learn farriery as a profession. Applicants to this course will be able to get more information when they apply from Mike Wildenstein, the Resident Farrier who teaches the course.
