Lessons Learned

Seven weeks later, the blowout wound was almost healed and no signs of it remaining in the bottom of the hoof. The horse traveled sound at this time. |
Most times these complex treatments will do the trick. The horse Dicken and I worked on traveled sound when seen 7 weeks later. The blowout hole on the bulb was healed to a scab the size of a quarter.
Looking back, perhaps we should have refused to pull that nail. Dicken says from now on, he’ll evaluate puncture wounds on a case-by-case basis, probably pulling a few obviously noninvasive objects but leaving anything remotely serious. I also plan on deferring to the veterinarian next time, mainly due to the litigious society we live in. The risk vs. reward doesn’t add up.
And on top of everything else, the check for all the shoeing on this horse bounced.
