WHO ARE WE?: American Farriers Journal is an international farrier (horseshoeing) business magazine that is published eight times per year and circulates to a paid circulation of more than 7,000 readers in the farrier industry. As a hands-on magazine for professional farriers, content focuses on hoof care and shoeing techniques. Our Web site is an online extended service of the magazine.

WHAT WE WANT: American Farriers Journal welcomes editorial contributions that are skillfully crafted and interesting to our audience; subject matter that professional farriers can use to do a better job of shoeing horses and running their farrier businesses, including:

  • Hoof-care ideas
  • Specialized and therapeutic shoeing techniques
  • Farrier tool selection and maintenance
  • Farrier business practices and customer relations
  • Horse anatomy and physiology
  • Horse leg pathology
  • Horse nutrition
  • Forging and welding
  • Horse handling when shoeing 
  • Customized shoeing rigs
  • Farrier and veterinarian relationships

WHAT WE DON'T WANT: American Farriers Journal does not cover topics such as non-equine blacksmithing, general horse care, horse riding or training. 

SUBMISSIONS
Before writing an article or sending us photographs, please submit a query letter to American Farriers Journal, P.O. Box 624, Brookfield, WI 53008-0624. A query letter saves you the time and effort of producing an article or taking photos we aren´t likely to publish or duplicating a similar article we already have on hand. Query letters will be answered in a timely fashion.

ARTICLE GUIDELINES
ORIGINAL: All articles submitted to American Farriers Journal must be original and previously unpublished.

PUBLISHER'S RIGHTS: American Farriers Journal purchases full and exclusive rights to an author´s work not only for the magazine, but for all media, including electronic distribution and on-line services, electronic databases and microfilm.

NO GUARANTEE: Articles requested by and submitted to the American Farriers Journal editors are not guaranteed to be published. Publication depends upon article quality, illustration quality and various other considerations.

LENGTH: Articles must be less than 3,000 words and no longer than is essential to tell the story.

STYLE: Articles should be written according to standard Associated Press style, typewritten and double-spaced on plain white bond paper. Each article must include a title, complete references when needed (see style and example below) and a brief author´s biography. If possible, please use 12-point type and a plain Courier font.

DISK FILES: We prefer to receive articles on a computer disk or via e-mail. MS-Word documents are peferred, but most standard word processing programs are acceptable. Articles also can be sent as an e-mail attachment.

ARTWORK: Articles should be accompanied by quality color or black-and-white photographs (color prefered), slides or labeled line drawings. Due to quality concerns, any digital photos must be 300 dpi and at least 4 inches wide. All artwork must include detailed caption information.

UNSOLICITED ARTICLES: Articles not requested by American Farriers Journal should include a self-addressed envelope stamped with proper first-class postage so they can be returned to the author. American Farriers Journal is not responsible for returning articles not accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

EDITORIAL REFERENCE STYLE: American Farriers Journal requires authors to provide accurate and specific references or bibliographies at the end of each article, whenever possible, particularly for technical articles.

Reference and bibliography lists should be presented in numerical referenced order using the following style: author´s last name, author´s first initials (multiple authors in same style), title of referenced article, publication or book referenced, year of publication referenced, volume number and page numbers of referenced material.

Here is a reference sample: 1. Moyer W, Anderson JP. Lameness Caused By Improper Shoeing. Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association, 1975;166;47-52.

MANUSCRIPT DEADLINES: American Farriers Journal is published eight times per year and editorial deadlines for a specific issue are a minimum of eight weeks prior to publication: January/February,  March, April, May/June, July/August, September/October, November, December

EDITORIAL PAYMENT: Payment to authors and photographers is based on the actual word count used in the publication and the number of photographs or illustrations actually printed. Payment is made at the time of publication.
