BWFA President Questions Proposal

AFJ readers should be aware that nine resolutions were brought to the AFA board of directors at its February convention meeting in Chattanooga. Of the nine resolutions, only three, Resolutions 1, 8 and 9, were accepted.

Resolution 1 is a proposal for a survey to be undertaken by the AFA (“in collaboration with other organizations and individuals, as desirable”) and continues with a listing of survey information categories with a conclusion of “and other information that may be deemed desirable.”

School owners and farriers should be concerned about a survey of this magnitude of importance being conducted by any organization on itself. American industries have a history of skewing survey information to present results that supports their agenda. The most effective surveys are conducted by independent sources to bring about unbiased conclusions.

Then comes the question of what is meant by the words “as desirable” and “may be deemed necessary.” These two phrases appear to have multiple interpretations, which can lead to misunderstandings between farriers, farrier organizations and members.

Another question that should be asked is, what is the purpose of doing an extensive survey? If the AFA board chose to vote down the pursuit of unified school accreditation, the establishment of core teaching requirements, a national standard farrier exam, an examination board, a state registration board and the “grandfathering” of farriers, then why are funds to be used for a survey? I believe accepted Resolutions 8 and 9 hold the answer to the question.
